From exhibition statement:
Well - Well is a site-responsive installation by Anna Showers-Cruser (ASC) that recontextualizes the artist’s intensive studio research from their recent creative residency fellowship with the Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences. This ephemeral assemblage of 2D, 3D, and 4D work furthers an overarching studio project rooted in Appalachian studies, including a developing archive focused on Ritchie County, West Virginia, as both the regional epicenter of abandoned (“orphan”) oil and gas wells, and the site of a former ancestral dairy farm.
The artist’s current research practice involves intersectional disability and climate justice, Zoë Sofia’s thoughts on “Container Technologies”, and a breadth of borrowed, grown, and gifted material samples (such as, repurposed medical documents, hybrid clay bodies, boar bristles, wool, mineral and botanical pigments, geological diagrams, botanical prints, embroidery, wood ash, and cornbread) to meditate on when and how human and more-than-human bodies are systematically assessed for intervention.
Cornbread and pastries were made available at the exhibition to benefit Appalachian Voices, Hambidge, and Mental Health Virginia.
